In the upcoming PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients League, a playstyle concept built around the new endgame Nightfall, has garnered significant attention.

PoE 2’s gear design and skill synergies have been further refined in this update, and Nightfall’s unique mechanics offer players a combat approach distinct from traditional melee or throwing builds.

The following details the structure of this build across four dimensions: core gear, skill synergies, Ascendancy passives, and the gameplay loop.

Core Gear

Nightfall grants skills in two phases. The first phase involves throwing a shield, which oldown.

The core of this build lies in this: when a Slam destroys an ice crystal in the environment, the cooldown is also reset. This means that to efficiently utilize Slam for damage output, a stable supply of ice crystals must be generated as the medium for cooldown resets.

This skill’s damage relies entirely on the shield’s inherent defensive attributes. The skill description states that every 15 points of Shield armor adds 7 to 11 points of physical damage.

After enhancements like Corruption, it can theoretically exceed 1,000 armor, providing over 600 points of physical damage. Skill Synergy

To achieve continuous refresh of Slam’s cooldown, this build requires selecting the quarter staff skill Frozen Locus. This skill directly generates an ice crystal on the ground.

The sequence for single-target attacks is: cast Frozen Locus to generate an ice crystal, then use Slam with Shield to destroy the ice crystal and deal damage. Repeat this cycle after the cooldown resets.

This combo compresses the 4-second cooldown to reset immediately after each Slam, transforming the previously low-frequency, high-damage skill into a sustainable core damage output method.

Since Shield skill doesn’t use a main-hand weapon, players can freely choose any weapon as a secondary weapon.

Early on, Hrimnor’s Hymn is usable. This weapon requires a keystone and allows dual-wielding of two-handed weapons. Its effect is that the user’s Slam skill triggers an additional Aftershock.

However, Aftershock itself cannot trigger another Aftershock, so this weapon’s value is primarily concentrated in the ancient game. Later, a high-item-level, low-base-rarity two-handed hammer can be used, gaining attributes such as skill level, critical strike damage, or additional damage through modifiers.

Another option is Font of Power Omen Sceptre, which provides up to 50% additional increased spirit and comes with Malice, stacking critical strike chance.

Frozen Locus requires a staff, so the character can also equip Hand of Chayula to apply the mark.

Since Shield skills convert 50% of physical damage to cold damage, and Slam portion can potentially reach 80% or even 100% cold conversion, choosing Freezing Mark allows you to fully utilize frequent Freezing and gain additional cold damage.

Charge Mark creates Shocked Ground, providing an additional 20% damage. Fortifying Cry automatically triggers Shield Wave, whose damage is also based on Shield attributes, consistent with the core skill. Finally, Herald of Ice aura is used to improve map clearing efficiency.

Ascendancy Passives

The following are some Ascendancy passives required for this build.

Hulking Form and Ancestral Empowerment

Ascendancy class is Titan, whose core passive, Hulking Form, provides comprehensive attribute boosts. More importantly, Ancestral Empowerment node grants Ancestrally Boosted effect to every second Slam skill cast by the user, providing 30% more damage and a 25% increased area of effect.

Because Nightfall’s Slam skill carries Slam tag, and the designers have confirmed it belongs to Slam tag, this enhancement will trigger at least once every two Slams.

Furthermore, supplemented by Fist of War Support Gems, which double Ancestrally Boosted effect (60% more damage and 50% increased area of effect), this Support Gem’s 14-second internal cooldown only applies to itself and does not affect the triggering of Ancestrally Boosted from other sources.

Warcry and Block Talents

Passive tree contains numerous Warcry-related nodes, significantly increasing the damage bonus and duration of Warcry. In boss fights, using Warcry approximately every 6 seconds maintains a high damage increase.

Simultaneously, since the character wields a shield, passive points can be invested to maximize Block rate, further enhancing survivability. Practical Considerations

For groups of normal monsters, Slam isn’t always necessary. After throwing a shield, it automatically returns, resetting the throw cooldown each time it returns. Therefore, you can simply clear areas by continuously throwing shields.

If the throwing damage isn’t enough to deal with high-density monsters, you can switch to Forge Hammer skill. However, note that this skill uses the main-hand weapon, not Shield. Therefore, if your main-hand weapon is a low-damage Font of Power Omen Sceptre or a low-level base, use it with caution.

Patch 0.5.0 adds the ability to upgrade Unique items, allowing you to upgrade low-level unique weapons to an 80-level base, significantly increasing their base damage.

However, Giant’s Blood talent triples the weapon’s required stats, so after upgrading, you must ensure the stats are sufficient to equip it. This mechanism provides Hrimnor’s Hymn with late-game potential, but requires precise planning of attribute allocation.

The overall operational logic of this build is clear, making it suitable as an initial progression solution for Patch 0.5.0. However, its actual effectiveness needs further verification after the patch notes are released on May 21st.
